the articles mentioned above were in a sealed parcel which I
handed to the Purser of the Vessel after we left London
receiving an official receipt for them. This receipt together
with my Passport and other documents I placed in one of my
boxes and when the ship was torpedoed this box went down with
my other effects.
3.
At about 2.30 o'clock in the afternoon of the 21st or
22nd. December 1915 the 8.8. Yasaka Maru was torpedoed by an
enemy submarine and sank within an hour of being struck.
4. The Purser of the said a... Yasaka Maru informed me,
when the Passengers and crew were being conveyed to Portsaid
on a French vessel which rescued us that he had saved all the
money handed to him and locked up by him in a small safe lodged
which could be opened by a key, but that the safe in which he
lodged my parcel contained a combination lock and in the excite-
ment of the moment he had forgotten the combination which would
open the safe,
5. The value of the property which I lost through the
sinking of the a.. Yasaka Maru I estimate to be £2,035-0-0
shown
as above.
6.
All the articles referred to in this Affidavit were
the property of either my wife or myself.
7.
I have not nor has any one on my behalf received any
payment on account of the loss.
Declared before me the
16th day of December 1918,
